The woods are thick and lush this June, thanks to all the rain we've received, and I like to imagine the life that comes out of hiding under the moonlight and the scattering of stars, when we are tucked away in our beds, dreaming. I thought of Victorian butterfly collectors, particularly the women in their long sleeved coats and long skirts who traveled to exotic countries in search of butterflies, and I imagined the spirit of one such woman searching for moths flitting through the dark woods.
The Moth Collector is made of paper-mache, felt, acrylic paint, amongst other things, and stands with the help of a moth-painted wooden pole that fits into the back underside of her overcoat. A night-time forest scene is painted on the interior of the cigar box lid. The Moth Collecter, her moth net and the little pole can fit inside the cigar box for storage.
