I just finished this mixed media painting this morning. It's so different from anything I've ever made and I'm looking at it as a rough "sketch". I like the rough texture of the plaster of Paris - I'll have to try that again, perhaps with layers of stenciled plaster next time. The rusted inner pieces of the lock remind me of primitive African sculptures. This really has been a good summer for hopping, skipping and jumping out of the (paint)box.

This morning I woke up from a good dream...you know, the kind of dream where you wish you could just spend one more hour or two seeing where it takes you... Well, in this dream, I was traveling by foot around the Gaspesie region of Quebec. Every building I entered unfolded like a book and told its story. I can't remember the details but I remember there were characters who are unclear now and the beautiful, rugged grey and ochre landscape of Gaspesie that I will always remember from our roadtrip there last fall. Those were the colours I was thinking of while painting this piece.
