Something strange happened yesterday.
As you know, it's been sweltering hot here on the east coast and I spent most of this past week hiding indoors with the curtains drawn and the air conditioning on. By mid-week, though, I started to feel the onslaught of cabin fever. I needed to distract myself and I thought, Why not make more of those paper mache dolls? The wet paper mache would dry outside in no time.
So I made four little figures - a woman and three men - and laid them out on a table on the balcony to dry.
Well. Later that evening, I went outside to check on them and to my surprise, I discovered that there were only three figures laying on the table.
One of them was missing.
Did it roll off the table? I looked around and didn't see it. Did it roll off the table and then off the balcony? I looked over the railing to the ground below. It wasn't there. Did I accidentally drop it on my way out to the balcony even though I swear I put four figures onto the table outside...? Nope. And then I thought, Squirrels. Noooo...they wouldn't do that...or would they?
I put on my sandals and tromped down the stairs and outside...
and sure enough, within minutes I discovered my fourth paper mache figure discarded under a shrub. The squirrel dragged it from off the table, down a tree and had then proceeded to eat all the paper mache from the body and had gnawed the head. My poor little fourth figure looks like a zombie.
Which my husband thought was great! Make it a zombie!, he said. And you know, I think I might.
